On 25 March 1992 Aldershot F.C. finally went out of business and were obliged to resign from the Football League due to the bankruptcy. In response a group of supporters set up a new club, Aldershot Town, which started in the Isthmian League Division Three, five levels below the division in which Aldershot FC had been playing.

With the formation of the FA Premier League for the 1992-93 season, the English Football League reformed with the three divisions which remained in the Football League. All three were renamed; the old Fourth Division was now called the Football League Third Division.
